Abstract
In this paper we describe a novel architecture for real-time control of manufacturing, based on an earlier scheduling system, namely ReDS. The new system, ReDS2, has many differences from its predecessor, the most noteworthy being its recursive architecture composed of self-reliant Planning Agents. It allows an arbitrary number of control layers of autonomous and independent modules and a broadcast architecture for communication. The proposed architecture has a number of advantages over the conventional approaches and it is intended to be a small step in the direction of developing a generic and unified approach for planning, scheduling and control of production in manufacturing organizations.
