Abstract

Discussions on evolutionary links between animal groups often center around the meiobenthos, particularly from exotic and undisturbed habitats like the deep-sea, caves, and the groundwater system. Phylogenetic considerations mostly refer to morphological features of the small-sized animals, often in combination with an unusual, disjunct zoogeographic pattern. This chapter will deal with (1) structural and (2) distributional aspects of meiofauna studies relevant for evolutionary aspects.
