Characterization of Inhibitory and Stimulatory Effects of Zona Pellucida Glycoproteins on the Proacrosin/Acrosin System

Abstract

Proacrosin, the zymogen form of the serine protease acrosin, is located in the acrosome of mammalian spermatozoa. During the process of gamete interaction, acrosin is believed to assist sperm penetration of the surrounding egg shell, the zona pellucida. This penetration is supported by a proteolytic attack of acrosin against the zona glycoproteins.
