Abstract

The vibration of a shaft depends amongst other factors on its stiffness. This is defined as the quotient of a force applied to the shaft divided by the resulting deflection in the direction of the force. If this stiffness is independent of the direction of the force in the plane in question, then the shaft is regarded as circular, otherwise it is non-circular.
