Sleep-Related Breathing Disorders and Nocturnal Hypertension

Temporal Variations of the Cardiovascular System

Abstract

For a long time, the investigation and description of diseases was related to changes which could be observed and measured during the day. In recent years there has been an increasing awareness that pathological states also occur during the night. These escape detection by usual methods and require techniques of investigation which can also be used in sleep. Since the 1970s sleep-related disturbances of breathing (in particular sleep apnea) have been increasingly explored on the basis of this approach.
