Abstract
In this chapter the fundamental problem of transfer and dissipation of vibrational energy in liquids is investigated on a microscopic level. Vibrational excess energy may appear locally by chemical reactions or via optical excitations. The subsequent redistribution within the excited molecule and the flow of energy to the surroundings occurs very rapidly. Picosecond pulses are necessary to study the various relaxation processes which finally lead to thermal equilibrium.
