Abstract

Inorganic and organic geochemical investigations have been carried out on the Kupferschiefer of 30 drillings of the Lower Rhine Basin. The target area covers a region of 600 km2. It represents the most southern part of the former Zechstein sea in this area and is situated north of the Rhenohercynian zone in the sub-Variscan foreland of the Variscan Mountains. The folded Carboniferous rocks of the Variscan basement are discordantly overlain by the Permian Kupferschiefer. Rotliegend sediments are totally lacking. The area is characterized by Variscan striking synclines and anticlines, which are perpendicularly cut by deep, northwest-southeast striking faults. In the west and the north two areas with an increased Zn-Pb-mineralization occur. They are both linked to the main tectonic structures, and, in the western part, additionally to an anomalous maturation of the Kupferschiefer. The base metal mineralization of the Kupferschiefer reflects the metal distribution of the basement and is suggested to represent the final stage of intraformational processes. A positive correlation between mineralization and organic carbon has not been observed.
