Integral Foam Based on Polystyrene

  • Chapter
Integral/Structural Polymer Foams

Abstract

Integral foams based on polystyrene (PS) account for a sizeable quantity of commercial thermoplastic IF’s. Up to 1980 the output of these materials grew very quickly. For example, in the USA alone, the output increased 40-fold over the period 1975 to 1980 and amounted to 136,000 tons per year 1). The situation is now changing: integral PS foam production is decreasing, whereas the development of other IF materials, especially PUR integral foams, is increasing rapidly (see Chapters 13 and 23).
