Abstract
Most plastics are subjected to thermal or oxidative stresses during processing or on exposure. All polyolefins require stabilization against thermal, UV or metal-catalyzed oxidation. The combined oxygen and UV-radiation has an even greater destructive effect. The oxidation of polymers by molecular oxygen is in most instances a free radical chain reaction, with hydroperoxide as the primary product. Stabilizers can be effective as peroxide scavengers, metal deactivators, chain terminators and UV absorbers.
