Abstract
The primary objective of the program has been to investigate the properties of the field emitter under a wide range of operating temperatures and field, also to study the various phenomena associated with field emission at higher current densities than had been previously attained under controlled conditions. A secondary objective, of technological importance, involved investigation of methods by which field emission could be stabilized at useful levels of current and voltage for possible application as a cathode in electron devices.
This work has been supported by the US Navy Office of Naval Research, Bureau of Ships, Bureau of Ordnance, the US Air Force, and Research Corporation.
At the request of the program chairman this paper summarizes some 12 years of work carried on by the research group formerly at Linfield College and presently at Linfield Research Institute. Since the major portion of this work appears in the available scientific literature, and in order to minimize the text and number of figures of this conference report, the early work is very briefly summarized with careful reference to the literature wheer required.
