Abstract
Certain observations made by I. Langmuir as long ago as 1924 on the behaviour of a gas discharge in pure argon under the presence of small amounts of sputtered tungsten, and his explanation of the visible phenomena by assuming the presence of submicroscopical tungsten aggregates were confirmed by electron microscopical methods. The experimental parameters leave considerable room for the control of particle size and degree of dispersion. A comparison is made with other methods of obtaining particles of colloidal sizes.
