Abstract

Fluoranthene is abundantly present in coal-tar, where it was discovered long ago.1 Almost simultaneously it was isolated from “Stupp”, a byproduct in the production of mercury, in Idria.2 Fluoranthene was assigned the wrong formula (I), which remained unchallenged for many years.
