Abstract

The concept of “elementary excitations” has been very useful as an intermediate step in the explanation and prediction of the physical behavior of condensed matter from an atomistic point of view. In analogy to elementary particles, the elementary excitations can be classified as fermions or bosons. Some of their properties are described. The relevance of these properties for the explanation of a number of unusual macroscopic phenomena is discussed.

Nach einem Vortrag aus Anlaß der 106. Versammlung der Gesellschaft Deutscher Naturforscher und Ärzte am 5. Oktober 1970 in Düsseldorf.
