Abstract
The basic objective of this volume is to provide a broad inventory of our present state of knowledge of continental margins, not only for its own value, but also as a basis for future studies, research, and exploration. The chapters in the volume deal with the characteristics and history of these margins, ancient and modern, with examples from many parts of the world. From the vantage point of editors of the volume, it seems appropriate to comment briefly here on some of the more apparent and broadly important aspects of the continental margins of the world and to suggest directions of research or important problems that could significantly improve our understanding of these important features. All references cited will be to contributions in this volume and locations of areas referenced are given in the frontispiece.
