Abstract
This paper had its origin in an assessment of the potential petroleum resources of all marine areas of the earth, prepared for the United Nations at the request of the Head of the U.N. Ocean Economics and Technology branch, to whom a document covering the study was presented in April 1973. The writer is grateful to the United Nations for permission to publish this revised version.
