Abstract
Detailed studies of continental margins do not have a long history. Although surface geological sampling in shallow water dates back to the eighteenth century, systematic investigation of the topography and the surface geology date back only for the last half century or so. Early gravity measurements gave some clues about the deeper character of the margins, but serious geophysical investigations were not carried out until after World War II. Since that time many margins have been studied in greater or lesser detail using geological and geophysical techniques that continued to improve significantly.
