Abstract

In lower vertebrates, especially in fish, the following cells and organs are considered as serving as chemoreceptors: solitary chemosensory cells, oligovillous cells, neuromasts of the lateral line system, end buds, taste buds in a stricter sense and olfactory epithelia (cf. Chap. 2.2.9, this Vol.). Most of these structures are situated in the outer skin of the animal, but some of them also occur in the inner epithelia of the oral cavity, the prebranchial (pharyngeal) and branchial region. Only the olfactory organ is strictly bound to an inner surface of the body and is therefore not considered as a structure of the integument. For this reason, this very important chemical sense organ is omitted in this review. The reader interested in morphology and physiology of the olfactory organ (and also the taste organ) is referred to the following references: Beidler (1971 a, b), Hoar and Randall (1971), Friedemann (1973), Grant and Mackie (1974), Vinnikov (1974), Andres (1975), Harder (1975), Stoddard (1980), Breipohl (1982), Hara (1982) and Bolis et al. (1984). In addition, a lot of information is contained in the Olfaction and Taste Symposia Volumes I–VII, edited by Zottermann (1963), Hayashi (1967), Pfaffmann (1969), Schneider (1972), Denton and Coghlan (1975), Le Magnen and Mac Leod (1977) and Van der Starre (1980). Klaprat and Hara (1984), compiled a bibliography on chemoreception in fishes, especially citing olfaction and taste papers.
