Abstract
Mesangial cells are mesenchymal cells of the kidney glomerulus, forming the inner core of the glomerular stalk. They produce an extracellular basement membrane-like matrix, which may be a site for ultrafiltrate formation [1,2,3]. Mesangial contraction may contribute to the regulation of glomerular hemodynamics as well as of surface and/or permeability of the filtration barrier [2,4].
These studies were supported by grants from the Ministero della Pubblica Istruzione of Italy (quota 60%), and by a research grant from Janssen Farmaceutici, Rome, Italy (to P.M.).
