Abstract
Studies of the number of Kekulé structures (K) of benzenoid classes here referred to as t-tier strips started by the work of Gordon and Davison (1952). The 3-tier strips are relatively simple and well known (Gordon and Davison 1952; Yen 1971; Cyvin 1986d). A systematic study of 4-tier strips has been performed more recently by Cyvin (1986d). Before that some studies of 5-tier strips had been published (Gordon and Davison 1952; Yen 1971; Ohkami and Hosoya 1983). The first systematic treatment of 5-tier strips is due to Cyvin SJ, Cyvin and Gutman (1985).
