Summary
Metal artefacts in CT disturb a reliable visualisation and a quantitative assessment of the bone-implant interface. By using an extended CT-scale in a modified reconstruction technique the full implant geometry and its relationship to cortical bone can be displayed.
This technique was verified on cadaver femora with implanted hip endoprostheses and on 10 patients with custom-made hip endoprostheses. A “filling-factor” defined as the ratio of implant area to medullary space area was determined for each section. We conclude from our preliminary results that such area measurements could be useful to evaluate the contact area between bone and implant with the aim to quantify the fit of different types of prostheses.
