Theoretical Investigation of the Cylinder Wake with a Low-Dimensional Galerkin Method

  • Conference paper
Book cover Bluff-Body Wakes, Dynamics and Instabilities

Summary

A Galerkin method with less than 200 global modes for the 3D, incompressible, viscous flow around a circular cylinder is sketched. With this low-dimensional method, the first 3D global stability analysis of the steady and the periodic cylinder wake are carried out. The instability of the steady flow is shown to be associated with a discrete 2D eigenmode and a continuum of 3D eigenmodes. The periodic flow is found to become unstable by a 3D near-wake instability.
