Zusammenfassung
Zu verstehen, warum sich Menschen wie verhalten, ist Gegenstand zahlreicher Wissenschaftsdisziplinen und bildet die Grundlagen für praktische Anwendungen, unter anderem für das Design von Verhaltensinfrastruktur. Um möglichst belastbare Einsichten in das tatsächliche Verhalten der Menschen zu gewinnen, ist die Wahl der geeigneten Methode essenziell. Da Befragungen mit relativ geringem Aufwand zu Ergebnissen führen, sind sie häufig das Mittel der Wahl. Beobachtungsstudien hingegen sind vergleichsweise aufwändig und erfordern zusätzlich ein hohes Maß an Expertise, um die notwendige Reliabilität zu erzielen. In diesem Kapitel werden unterschiedliche Methoden vorgestellt und ihre Vor- und Nachteile beschrieben. Anhand eines konkreten Fallbeispiels wird die Aussagekraft von Fragebogenstudien und Beobachtungsstudien gegenübergestellt, inwiefern sie Vorhersagen über das tatsächlich gezeigte Verhalten erlauben. Auch wenn strukturierte Verhaltensbeobachtungen aufwändig erscheinen, ist ihr Beitrag zu einem Verständnis des menschlichen Verhaltens essenziell.
