Abstract
The following chapter describes and adapts the macro-meso-micro model to expand the theoretical explanations for gender gaps in mathematics and reading competencies and to derive the missing macro-meso-micro links. First, I use gender effects to explain the gender gaps on the micro level. Second, I derive how school and education system characteristics affect the gender gaps in competencies. Third, I discuss further relevant characteristics.
