Abstract

In most countries, differences in educational outcomes, e.g., achievement and attainment, between boys and girls persist. These gender differences are especially noteworthy in societal perceived gender-typical educational areas; e.g., mathematics is male connotated, while reading is female connotated (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development [OECD], 2019). This research analyzes how education system and school characteristics affect the gender gaps in mathematics and reading competencies of 15-year-old students.
