Zusammenfassung
Indien ist nicht deshalb so besonders, weil es dort etwas gäbe, das sonst nirgendwo vorliegt, sondern weil verschiedene Elemente teilweise extrem gesteigert und in spezifischer Weise miteinander verflochten sind. Ein Paradebeispiel sind die sozialen Verhältnisse, die noch unentwirrbarer mit ökonomischen, politischen und religiösen Aspekten vermengt sind, als in anderen Kulturen oder Regionen der Welt.
Im vorliegenden Beitrag wird die Sozialstruktur Indiens hinsichtlich des gängigen Worts „Kaste“ diskutiert. Bei näherem Hinsehen wird ersichtlich, dass nicht klar ist, welche Realität damit bezeichnet werden soll. Auch gibt es kein in ganz Indien einheitliches „Kastensystem“. Darüber hinaus sollte man sich vor weiteren Fehldeutungen hüten: Kasten sind nicht Jahrtausende alt, wie viele Inder gerne behaupten, und sie unterlagen im Laufe der Geschichte erheblichen Wandlungen in Wechselwirkung mit den politisch-ökonomischen Rahmenbedingungen.
