Zusammenfassung

Können erfolgreiches Altern und Pflegebedürftigkeit zusammengehen oder schließen sie sich gegenseitig aus? Von dieser Frage ausgehend untersucht das Kapitel zunächst das Ringen der Gerontologie, eine Defizitsicht des Alterns zu überwinden. Modelle erfolgreichen Alterns versuchen, eine positive Sichtweise auf Alter und Altern zu vermitteln, tun sich jedoch schwer damit, dass Pflegebedürftigkeit nach wie vor ein Schicksal des hohen Alters ist. Empirisch finden sich in der Regel nur sehr niedrige Raten an erfolgreich alternden Menschen im hohen Alter. Möglichkeiten einer Überwindung dieses Dilemmas werden zur Diskussion gestellt.
