Zusammenfassung
Es war auf einer Konferenz der Amerikanischen Gesellschaft für Soziologie im Jahr 1947, dass als Antwort auf meinen eigenen Beitrag über die Rolle allgemeiner Theorie in soziologischer Analyse Robert Merton das erste Mal sein Plädoyer für die Konzentration auf Theorien der „mittleren Reichweite“ vorgetragen hat. In den seither vergangenen Jahren hat es bedeutende Entwicklungen an beiden Fronten und in gewissem Maße in der Verknüpfung der beiden Ebenen miteinander gegeben. Bei dieser früheren Gelegenheit war mein Beitrag weitgehend programmatisch formuliert.
