Zusammenfassung
Seit einigen Jahrzehnten lässt sich eine weite Verbreitung der Überzeugung beobachten, dass Innovation grundsätzlich etwas Gutes ist und das Mittel der Wahl darstellt, um Dinge zu verbessern, Probleme aller Art zu lösen und die Gesellschaft in den unterschiedlichsten Handlungsbereichen voranzubringen. Diese Überzeugung begründet den Imperativ, innovativ sein zu sollen und danach zu streben, Neuerungen zu entwickeln und gesellschaftlich zur Wirkung zu bringen. In diesem Beitrag fragen wir nach den Faktoren, die dazu beigetragen haben, dass der Innovationsimperativ gesamtgesellschaftliche Wirksamkeit erlangt hat und sich über die genuin neuheits- und innovationsaffinen gesellschaftlichen Handlungsfelder hinaus auch auf tendenziell innovationsaverse Handlungsfelder ausgebreitet hat.

Mervi Hasu et al., (2012, S. 97) argumentieren: „The ‚innovate or die‘ mentality is mirrored in the idea of ‚publish or perish‘“. Das ist nur teilweise zutreffend. Denn der Zwang zum Publizieren steht unmittelbar nur mit der Anforderung der Produktion von Neuem in Verbindung und nicht mit der Anforderung, es auch gesellschaftlich umzusetzen. Er ist also in der zuvor dargelegten Weise nur indirekt mit einem Innovationsimperativ verknüpft.
