Zusammenfassung
Mit der Erfindung von Kryptowährungen haben sich neue Wege für die Schaffung privaten Geldes ergeben, das in Konkurrenz zum bisherigen öffentlichen Geld tritt. Vor diesem Hintergrund beschäftigen sich immer mehr Zentralbanken mit der Ausgabe einer eigenen digitalen Währung, so auch die Europäische Zentralbank. Die digitale Währung soll Eigenschaften des Bargelds wie Anonymität und Unabhängigkeit mit den Vorteilen des elektronischen Geldes, nämlich für Zahlungen in der digitalen Welt nutzbar zu sein, verbinden. Schweden und China testen bereits erste Prototypen mit unterschiedlicher Ausgestaltung. Die Europäische Zentralbank prüft im Projekt Digitaler Euro, wie das Design des digitalen Euros aussehen müsste, damit er einerseits Effizienz und Sicherheit im Zahlungsverkehr fördert, andererseits aber nicht die Finanzstabilität gefährdet, indem er in Konkurrenz zu Kundeneinlagen bei Banken tritt. Während der digitale Euro aus Sicht der Nutzerinnen und Nutzer gegenüber bereits bestehenden Zahlungsmöglichkeiten nur wenig zusätzlichen Nutzen bringt, kann er aber im Finanzsystem zu einem deutlichen Strukturwandel im Zahlungsverkehr beitragen.
