Abstract
From the perspective of social and cultural geography, this article argues that city and countryside should be considered in the context of two different understandings of space: firstly, as the space of material objects and secondly, as semantics of space that have an effect on action. Both understandings have a close relationship to each other, but which has been neglected in previous academic discussions. For this reason, the article will look at these relationships in more detail. This is done with recourse to several examples through a discussion of the possibilities for distinguishing city and country in spatial semantic terms. To this end, two basic spatial semantic forms are proposed that represent the poles of a field in which city and country are then empirically figured: Separation and Hybridisation semantics. The aim of this argumentation is to generate more academic attention for the social function of spatial semantics and, in particular, to point out their transformational potential.
