Abstract
This chapter reflects on the significance these unusual elections have for American democracy. Despite numerous attempts at challenging it, the democratic process withstood the pressure of delegitimizing the elections. Political institutions and resolute individuals resisted attempts to change the election results after the fact. At the same time, the Trump presidency leaves behind a troublesome legacy. The image that unfolded during the election year about the existing power relations is multi-layered and shows that overcoming polarization and division requires more than just appeals for peaceful coexistence.
