Abstract
The paper addresses concept formation processes of students in the field of Algebra. More precisely, the paper deals with the questions of how students develop mathematical knowledge of the concept of variables in empirical contexts and how students can be supported in their mathematical concept formation process with a specially designed learning environment based on the usage of 3D printed objects. With regard to the methodology of this paper, we use the descriptive framework of empirical theories for the analysis of our case study. The objective is to describe the use of a learning environment to initiate targeted, theoretical terms like the concept of variables with students of a 9th grade. The students develop different notions of the concept of variables, using 3D printed objects. In this article, we argue that teaching mathematics consistently in an object-oriented way, and additionally promoting the development of concept formation as a mathematical activity, brings students in a situation where they develop hypotheses, test them and transfer them to other fields of application; thus, they engage in concept formation processes.
