Abstract
This paper discusses a balanced approach to civic and citizenship education at school to foster the development of active, autonomous future citizens, empowering students for developing their own understanding of social, political and economic questions as basis for independent contribution in common questions, considering the risk of educational approaches aiming to incapsulate the learning process of youngsters in top-down competence frameworks and measurable indicators both for knowledge, and skills, for attitudes and values.
