Abstract

The starting point of this paper is a major theological statement from the Protestant Church in Germany. At the center of this statement stands the plea for a transition from the traditional idea of “just war” to the idea of “just peace.” This transition refers to two fundamentally different theological teachings and can therefore be understood as a true paradigm shift in theological thinking. From this viewpoint, even the hope of identifying wars that can be called just and, by doing so, hopefully limiting unregulated and unjustified aggression can no longer be the main aim of theological ethics. Instead, efforts to realize just forms of peaceful life and eradicate injustice as a means of overcoming war must become the main tasks. Beyond assessing this statement from an ethical and political point of view, the chapter also includes an educational evaluation, especially from the perspective of religious education and with an eye to interreligious questions. Finally, the possible consequences of the ethical re-orientation will be discussed concerning religious education in theory and practice.
