  • Chapter
The Avogadro Constant

Part of the book series: essentials ((SE))

Abstract

In this chapter, you will get an overview of some methods for the determination of the Avogadro constant. The historical methods of Loschmidt and Millikan (oil drop test) are presented in addition to water electrolysis and single crystal investigations, as well as other methods. In addition, the change of the value for the Avogadro constant over the years is shown.

The Avogadro constant can be determined by a variety of methods. Some methods will be explained and used as examples. According to the literature (Bethge et al. 2004), more than 60 variants for determining the Avogadro constant are known. A few of them will now be shown as examples.
