Abstract

Universal lossless data compression techniques can improve the capacity, reliability, and lifetime of non-volatile flash systems [4, 7, 41–49]. However, data compression algorithms demand relatively high computational performance. Software implementations of data compression algorithms on flash memory controllers would result in unacceptable latency for practical applications. Therefore, in this chapter we focus on low-cost hardware implementations of data compression algorithms that enable fast applications in flash memory controllers with a small resources overhead.
