Zusammenfassung

Dieses Kapitel stellt die Englische Schule in den Internationalen Beziehungen vor. Das Kernargument dieser breiten theoretischen Tradition ist, dass Staaten durch gemeinsame Werte, Normen und Institutionen zu einer internationalen Gesellschaft integriert sind. Das Kapitel führt nach einem kurzen Überblick über die Theoriegeschichte in die drei wichtigsten Konzepte internationales System, internationale Gesellschaft und Weltgesellschaft ein und geht anschließend auf die wesentlichen Debatten in der Englischen Schule sowie ihre Verankerung in und Beiträge zu den Internationalen Beziehungen ein.

    Buzan führt dabei auch eine Unterscheidung zwischen „state-centric solidarism“ und „cosmopolitan solidarism“ ein. Der staatszentrische Solidarismus prägt dabei in Gestalt verstärkter gemeinsamer Werte und über Koexistenz hinausweisender zwischenstaatlicher Zusammenarbeit die Praxis der internationalen Gesellschaft, während der kosmopolitische Solidarismus mit seiner Betonung höherer Werte der gesamten Menschheit vor allem als Quelle normativer Prinzipien und Argumente fungiert (Buzan 2014, S. 114–120).

    In einer neuen, großangelegten Geschichte der Menschheit wählt Buzan (in Vorbereitung) den Titel „globale Gesellschaft“ („global society“), um die Einheit der Differenzierung von internationalem System, internationaler Gesellschaft und Weltgesellschaft zu bezeichnen.
