Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic was met with lockdowns and a massive deployment of working from home, whereby existing working practices and taken-for-granted procedures were challenged. In this article, we use the pandemic as a prism for reassessing office work, which allows us to see familiar things in new ways. As one of the results, we foresee that working from home will become more of a regular practice, and at higher levels than before the crisis. We nevertheless expect that co-located work will retain its primacy, since many established organizational processes, both formal and informal, are built around co-location. The future of office work is open-ended, since it is shaped by a multitude of players and developments. Post-pandemic office work has also implications outside the immediate office realm, on areas like transportation and urban planning. The development of post-pandemic office work is a continuous process that requires local adaption. It is permeated by normative considerations, for which we propose to apply the principle of sustainability as a normative guide for developing post-pandemic office work.
