Abstract

The following chapter deals with RPA governance and its implementation within an organisation. RPA governance should be one of the key aspects of any RPA implementation. At least if several processes are to be permanently automated and cross-departmental RPA use is planned. The chapter first clarifies the importance of RPA governance and distinguishes it from (general) IT governance. It then explains the specific components of RPA governance and possible procedures for introducing and establishing RPA governance in the organisation. One focus is the introduction of so-called RPA units. Both roles and tasks are defined within this framework. The final section is a discussion of RPA governance, RPA unit and the concept of the so-called Center of Excellence, which is often used in practice in connection with RPA.

Notes

  1. 1.

    See also Sect. 2.4.

  2. 2.

Another common term is the “Center of Excellence”. This will also be described below and separated from the RPA unit.

  3. 3.

For the sake of clarity, we will nevertheless speak here of a development activity with regard to RPA artefacts, not of a configuration.

  4. 4.

The consulting company uses the alternative term “Centre of Excellence” (CoE). The understanding of a CoE used here differs and is described in more detail below.
