Zusammenfassung
Dieser Beitrag widmet sich aktuellen Entwicklungen im Feld der childhood studies, die sich seit einigen Jahren in Rekurs auf materialitätsorientierte Theorieangebote und Forschungszugänge nachzeichnen lassen. Mit den childhood studies ist dabei ein internationales und inhaltlich heterogenes Feld von Forschungsarbeiten umrissen, das unterschiedlichste Disziplinen umspannt – Soziologie, Humangeographie, Anthropologie, Erziehungswissenschaft, Kunstgeschichte, usw. – aber dennoch auf einer gemeinsamen Prämisse aufbaut, nämlich das Kindheit als ein komplexes, soziales und kulturelles Phänomen zu verstehen ist (vgl. James und James 2008). Die childhood studies bauen entsprechend in erheblichem Maße auf den so genannten ‚new social studies of childhood‘ auf, einem zunächst sehr kleinen soziologischen Forschungsfeld, dass sich seit den späten 1980er Jahren reflexiv und kritisch mit der Stellung von Kindern in der Soziologie auseinander zu setzen begann (Prout und James 1990).
