Zusammenfassung

Was ist „Zentralasien“, und wie verhält sich der Begriff zu „Mittelasien“, „Turkestan“, „Eurasien“ und anderen verwandten Beschreibungen und Denkmustern? Dieser Beitrag stellt Zentralasien in historischer Perspektive vor und konzentriert sich dabei auf die Frage, wie die Region in den letzten dreihundert Jahren von innen und außen räumlich verstanden und eingegrenzt wurde. Es geht aber nicht nur um Begriffsgeschichte, sondern auch um die Frage, wie diese Kategorien verschiedene Facetten und Epochen sowie einen Wandel in Politik und Verwaltung vor Ort widerspiegeln.
