Zusammenfassung
Der Beitrag gibt einen Überblick über die EU-Beziehungen zu Zentralasien und diskutiert deren Entwicklung, Ziele und Wirksamkeit anhand der zwei Zentralasienstrategien von 2007 und 2019. Dabei wird deutlich, dass die EU auf absehbare Zeit einer der bedeutendsten Handelspartner Zentralasiens und eine wichtige Quelle von Direktinvestitionen in dieser Region bleibt. Zugleich zeit sich, dass dieser wirtschaftlichen Stärke weiterhin ein allenfalls mäßiger politisch-diplomatischer Einfluss und nur begrenzte finanzielle Mittel gegenüber steht. Dies unterscheidet die EU von anderen für die Region bedeutenden Akteuren wie Russland und China.
