Abstract
While Chapter 2 described the macro-institutional factors that determine the significance of student employment in the German context, the present chapter focuses on the micro-mechanisms through which student work can actually affect educational careers, transitions into the labour market, and social inequalities in the higher education system. The main objective is to set up the general theoretical and conceptual framework for the empirical analysis. The Chapter proceeds as follows. Section 4.1 specifies the concept of student employment by identifying the aspects of student work that are potentially relevant for educational and labour market outcomes.
