Zusammenfassung

Der Beitrag untersucht den Einfluss demokratischer Legitimität auf democratic backsliding – die schrittweise Demontage demokratischer Institutionen. Demokratische Legitimität setzt sich zusammen aus normativer und empirischer (wahrgenommener) demokratischer Legitimität (siehe Kap. 2). Aus dem Zusammenspiel beider Dimensionen ergibt sich eine Ursache für democratic backsliding: Mangelnde wahrgenommene Legitimität kann zu backsliding führen, aber nur in normativ demokratischeren Regimen, in denen Unmut seitens der Bürgerinnen in der Wahl antidemokratischer Kräfte leichter seinen Ausdruck finden kann. Die beiden Dimensionen demokratischer Legitimität werden mittels dreier Variablen erfasst: der Beurteilung durch die Bürgerinnen der Qualität der Demokratie im eigenen Land, der Wichtigkeit von Demokratie als Regierungsform in ihren Augen (beide World Values Survey) sowie der Qualität der demokratischer Institutionen laut theoretisch begründetem Expertenurteil (V-Dem). Getestet wird die Wirkung demokratischer Legitimität auf democratic backsliding in einem Drei-Wege-Interaktionsmodell im makro-quantitativen Vergleich.
