Abstract

The terrestrial hermit crabs of the genus Coenobita take up an important role for the beach environment as cleaning agents and as a link between the marine and terrestrial food web. As comparably little is known about the biology of this significant taxa, the aim of this master thesis was to better understand the mechanisms and factors that influence the populations of these tropical crustaceans. Populations of the two sympatric species C. rugosus and C. perlatus were thereby shown to be influenced by biotic, abiotic and anthropogenic factors in their behaviour, abundance and size structure.
