Abstract

Luxury is an idea with a long history. The concept is as old as humankind and has been an integral part of the history of civilizations from ancient Egypt, Rome, and China (Kapferer, 2009). People’s desire for immortality and life after death might be one of the oldest theories about luxury and material possessions (Kapferer, 2009). This section gives a brief overview of the history of luxury and consumption.
