Abstract

Ritual and ceremony are used synonymously in this research for practical reasons. They can be defined ‚as a formalised symbolic procedure, which has subjective and cultural meaning and transcendental aspects.’ (Presser-Velder, 2012, p. 13), although other definitions exist. The traditional use of ayahuasca has been socially embedded into rituals and their corresponding belief systems.
