Während die Relevanz so unterschiedlicher Autoren wie Ludwig Wittgenstein, Paul Grice, Ernst Cassirer, Edmund Husserl und Martin Heidegger für die Kommunikationstheorie mittlerweile etabliert ist, gilt dies noch nicht für Donald Davidson (1917-2003). Er zählt zu den am breitesten rezipierten und diskutierten US-amerikanischen Philosophen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Davidsons Einfluss ist bis heute in jeder philosophischen Diskussion präsent, mit deren Themen er sich beschäftigt hat – in der Erkenntnistheorie, der Handlungstheorie, der Philosophie des Geistes, der Ethik und vor allem in der Sprachphilosophie.
