Zusammenfassung
Nach dem Ende des Kalten Krieges schwand das wissenschaftliche Interesse am Systemkonflikt zwischen Kommunismus und Kapitalismus zunehmend. Stattdessen gerieten ab den 1990er Jahren verstärkt die Unterschiede innerhalb des kapitalistischen Systems selbst in den Fokus politökonomischer Forschung. Mit ihrer Introduction to Varieties of Capitalism liefern Peter A. Hall und David Soskice den wohl einflussreichsten Beitrag zur Debatte um die sogenannten Kapitalismusvarianten. Sie unterteilen die Industrieländer in liberale Marktwirtschaften auf der einen und koordinierte Marktwirtschaften auf der anderen Seite – zwei idealtypische kapitalistische Spielarten mit jeweils unterschiedlichen institutionellen Arrangements. Gerade die sich gegenseitig ergänzenden Institutionen innerhalb beider Idealtypen, so das Argument von Hall und Soskice, erklären dabei auch ihren ähnlich hohen wirtschaftlichen Erfolg. Dieser sei gerade in solchen Sektoren am größten, in denen die jeweilige kapitalistische Spielart komparative institutionelle Vorteile aufweise.
