Zusammenfassung
In Anbetracht einer bisher nur begrenzt wirksamen gesellschaftlichen Umweltvorsorge wird das Konzept „Krise“ als wissenschaftliche Perspektive untersucht. Dazu erfolgt zum einen eine Systematisierung grundlegender Mensch-Umwelt-Beziehungen. Zum anderen werden Merkmale von „Krise“ aus einem multidisziplinären Spektrum der Literatur recherchiert. Unter Anwendung der Merkmale auf die Mensch-Umwelt-Beziehungen wird eine Konzeptualisierbarkeit von „Umweltkrise“ exploriert. Dabei zeigt sich, dass einige Merkmale von „Krise“ sowohl für biophysische als auch für gesellschaftliche Phänomene von Mensch-Umwelt-Beziehungen relevant sein können. Insgesamt wird für das Konzept „Umweltkrise“ ein Potenzial zur Analyse und gegebenenfalls Bewältigung insbesondere von nicht intendierten anthropogenen Umweltveränderungen festgestellt und anhand dreier Beispiele der Umweltentwicklung illustriert. Für die weitere Forschung erfolgt daraus die Ableitung eines Bedarfs zur Schärfung des Konzepts sowie zu dessen Einsatz als Analyserahmen einschließlich der dazu notwendigen methodischen Entwicklungen. In den zu erwartenden Erkenntnissen werden für Politik, Wirtschaft und Zivilgesellschaft Ansatzpunkte für eine weitergehende Erreichung von Zielen der Umweltvorsorge gesehen.

Das in der nationalen und internationalen Umweltpolitik verankerte Vorsorgeprinzip leitet dazu an, frühzeitig und vorausschauend zu handeln, um Belastungen der Umwelt zu vermeiden (z. B. Bundesregierung 1986).
